How to be an Artist - Sally Hirst

This is the third in a series of video interviews I’m conducting with artists all over the world. (You can see the others here). I want to understand what makes them tick, how they approach their work and what advice they have for the rest of us.My guest this month is Sally Hirst, who is a full-time painter and printmaker who divides her time between the UK and Spain. In addition to making art, Sally has many years of experience in teaching, working with young people as well as adults.Sally and I talked about:

  • How she became an artist and why she moved into painting in recent years.
  • The challenges we all face as artists and why it takes courage to make art
  • How beginners or those returning to art can take the pressure off and just enjoy art-making
  • How to the secret to selling more art is to stop trying to please everyone else and start pleasing yourself

Sally is a warm and lovely human being and I know you will learn loads from listening to her speak. You can read more about her and see her work on her website at http://www.sallyhirst.co.uk/Click on the image below to start watching:Here is a small selection of Sally's work:  My next interview will be with Canadian artist Patty Ripley, who makes beautiful paintings and who I know you'll enjoy meeting.
