Feeling The Way Towards an Idea
At night where I live it gets very dark. There are no street lights and once everyone goes to bed, it's hard to see more than a few steps ahead. I like to go outside late at night and just listen to the quiet, but I have to hold my hand out in front of me to keep from bumping into things and hurting myself.
It's felt like that lately with my work.
I haven't know which way to go exactly, and trying to find my way has felt like those dark nights when you're just as likely to trip as you are to find the path.
But over the years what I've found is this: When you don't know what to do, or which way to go, just being still and waiting is the best approach. When it's time, you'll know what to do.
It's not like you get the whole path laid out in front of you (I wish!). You just get a glimmer, a whisper in the back of your head, a scrap of an idea that might one day turn into something if you play with it.
And at that point, it's easy to tell yourself it's nothing. That it'll be a dead end and you'll stub your toe, and there's a new season of "True Detective" starting so you'd be better off just pouring a glass of wine and watching that.
But it's worth ignoring that little voice, because the good stuff comes from those little whispers in your head.
My whispers told me "stone walls, acrylic inks, play with unusual colours, use collage for texture" and so that's what I've been doing. I'm not where I want to be yet, but I feel there's something here that I want to explore further.
What about you? What are the whispers telling you?
