Going Bigger
I’ve been moving on to bigger panels recently. I've had this 1m x 1m panel for a few months and I've been avoiding it. I knew it would challenge me and I was right. I've been learning all kinds of new lessons.Primarily, I’ve learned that you can’t be timid if you’re pushing your art to be bigger. If the panel or canvas is bigger, the brushes need to be bigger, the arm movements have to be bigger, the RISKS have to be bigger.Working larger means being larger – letting more of you out, raising your voice. On a 12 x 12” painting, you can whisper. On a 24” x 24”, you need to speak up. But on a 36” x 36”, you need to open your lungs and shout. You need to be BIG.And the thing is, you can’t be big in your studio, and then go back to your real life and shrink down again. Once you’ve gone there, you have to stay there.Maybe that’s what I’ve been afraid of.
