How to Make Interesting Textures in Acrylic Paint

One of my favourite things about painting is finding new and interesting textures. I love paintings that are layered, so that you see interesting textures peeping out from underneath smooth areas of paint.

I find new textures all the time - and the way that I discover them is by playing with paint. No expectations. No plans. Just grabbing whatever tools I can find and trying out things from the kitchen or the hardware store and seeing what happens. In this video, I demonstrate some of these tools (just click the play button to start watching).  Hopefully these ideas will inspire you to find more.Texture plays a huge role in my work. Here are just a few examples from recent work. I'd love to know about you - what textures do you enjoy?PS: I learned so much from Nicholas Wilton, an American artist who teaches a free online course once a year. He'll be running the course again beginning on February 14th and I recommend that you join in if you haven't done it before (and even if you have!) I will be doing the course again, and running a pop-up Facebook group with my Art Juice co-host Alice Sheridan. We'd love to have you along.
