what’s going on?

I am currently “between work” as actors say.

For a painter, this means my new idea hasn’t come yet - or at least that I haven’t settled on any one idea. So I sort of bob around, dabbling here and there, trying this or that, but not ready to commit.

This used to worry me - I’d feel certain I’d lost my way, that I’d never have another good idea again. But now I know it’s all part of my creative process. It’s simply what happens.

And so I am playing with expressive portraits and experimenting with raw and personal abstracts. Last week I even made a self-portrait. I am working in sketchbooks and on large sheets of paper and on small wooden panels and on raw canvas.

I trust that when the time is right, the ideas will gel. Something will bubble up from my subconscious. “What if you tried this?” it will say and I will try it and it will spark something exciting and my new project will be underway.

Until then, I will keep showing up and keep doing the work.
