The layered landscape

Abstract painting allows us to express more than just what we see. These paintings are also about what we feel and what we imagine and what we recall and what we hear and what we smell.

When we are on the moors, we are never alone. We are there with our memories and our thoughts and with the wind and the curlews and the heather and the gorse. And we are also there with the ghosts of those who went before us.

If you can’t attend the show, I made this video so you can experience it too ….

My process is one of addition and subtraction. Paint is added, then removed or distressed and partially covered over. This process mimics the ever-changing nature of the landscape as time and weather erode rocks and reshape hills, and it mimics our own personal evolution as we too are eroded and reshaped.

This layering process also creates a rich experience that rewards closer inspection. I like to build my work over time, imbuing each painting with a sense of time-worn history. I believe art should be about more than surface impressions - if you stop to look for a few moments, you will find hidden surprises in each of the paintings.

No one artist can ever capture this amazing landscape - but we can capture moments. We can express our own connection with it. We can find our own unique ways to say “I was here and this is how it felt.”
